Testosterone, as the naturally produced drug and one of the most widely used anabolic steroids, is the most cost-effective choice for a reference drug to which all others will be compared. And while it's entirely possible to build maximally effective steroid cycles without using testosterone, most don't, but use testosterone as a base. Or the approach may be completely healthy.
As a bodybuilding drug, testosterone is almost always used as an injectable ester, due to poor oral bioavailability and the impracticality of high-dose transdermal or sublingual administration. Pharmacologically, testosterone acts both through the androgen receptor and through other means. In practice, it is found that it synergistically combines with both those anabolic steroids classified as Class I and those classified as Class II, and therefore is described as having mixed activity.
The particular properties of testosterone that are known include that it enzymatically converts both todihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol (the most important of the estrogens).
While with normal testosterone levels and normal enzyme activity these conversions are actually desirable, with supraphysiological testosterone levels caused by drug administration they may be undesirable. DHT is at least three times more potent (effective per milligram) than testosterone at the androgen receptor (AR): therefore, in those tissues that convert testosterone to DHT, there is effectively three times more androgen than anywhere else in the body. Therefore, whatever level of androgen is experienced by the muscle tissue is actually multiplied three times or more in the skin and prostate. This can be overkill.
