What is Zovirax?
Zovirax (acyclovir) is an antiviral drug. It slows down the growth and spread of the herpes virus in the body. Acyclovir does not cure herpes, but it can reduce the symptoms of the infection.
Zovirax is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, such as genital herpes, cold sores, herpes zoster and chicken pox.
Zovirax can also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Take Zovirax 200 mg tablets for the entire period of time prescribed by your doctor. Symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cured.
Treatment with Zovirax should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (such as tingling, burning, blistering).
Herpes infections are contagious, and you can infect other people, even while you are treating Zovirax. Prevent infected areas from coming into contact with other people. Avoid touching an infected area and then touching the eyes. Wash your hands often to avoid transmitting the infection to others.
Before taking this medicine
You should not take Zovirax if you are allergic to aciclovir or valaciclovir (Valtrex).
To make sure Zovirax is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
