Spironolactone belongs to the class of drugs known as diuretics (water pills). It is used to treat edema (fluid retention) that occurs with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis and nephrotic syndrome. It is also used to treat hypertension and to diagnose and treat primary hyperaldosteronism (a condition in which too much aldosterone is produced by the adrenal glands).
Spironolactone can also be used to treat or prevent hypokalaemia (too little potassium in the body) when other methods are not appropriate. Spironolactone works by making the water lose excess water and salt, but reduces the loss of potassium from the body.

Each light yellow, round, biconvex, film-coated tablet, debossed with "ALDACTONE" and "25" on one side and "SEARLE" and "1001" on the other side and with peppermint odor, contains 25 mg spironolactone . Non-Medicinal Ingredients: Calcium Sulfate, Carnauba Wax, Corn Starch, Hypromellose, Magnesium Stearate, Opaspray M-1-2042, Peppermint Flavor, Polyethylene Glycol 400, Povidone and Stearic Acid.
100 mg
Each peach tablet, round, biconvex, coated, film-coated, debossed with "ALDACTONE" and "100" on one side and "SEARLE" and "1031" on the other side (marked) and with peppermint odor, contains 100 mg of spironolactone. Non-Medicinal Ingredients: Calcium Sulfate, Carnauba Wax, Corn Starch, Hypromellose, Magnesium Stearate, Opaspray M-1-2668, Peppermint Flavor, Polyethylene Glycol 400, Povidone and Stearic Acid.
How should I use this drug?
The recommended dose of spironolactone for adults ranges from 25 mg to 400 mg per day depending on the condition being treated. It can be taken in single or divided doses. For children with edema (fluid retention) associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome, the daily dose is based on body weight and is given in single or divided doses. Since this drug increases urine production, it is best to take it at the beginning of the day (with breakfast if you are taking a daily dose, or with breakfast and lunch if you are taking divided doses). Spironolactone can be taken with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take the drug with food. Many things can affect the dose of a drug a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose other than those listed here, do not change the way you are taking your medicine without consulting your doctor. It is important that this drug is taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Store this drug at room temperature, protect it from heat and humidity and keep it out of the reach of children.
